How To Build A Website For Beginners

How To Build a Website For BeginnersBeginners Are Welcome!

If you wish to learn how to build a website, and you’re a beginner, you’ve come to the right page!

Here, I will be going over some very basic steps for beginners, so, if you’re more advanced, you will probably be bored very soon. Please go ahead and check out the rest of my site to see what interests you.

So, What’s A Domain?

First of all, in order to build a website, you will need to choose between having a “domain” or a “sub-domain.”  A domain name is a “top-level” name of your website such as “www.MyDomainName.com” or “www.MyDomainName.net.” A “sub-domain” is a sub-set of a top-level domain that allows users to create their own page or location under that top-level domain. Examples include “www.MyDomainName.SiteRubix.com” or “www.MailDept.MydomainName.com.”

Website Domain Names For SaleSo, first things first, you will need to choose whether to purchase your own domain name, or whether you wish to use one of Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteRubix sub-domains for free. There are pros and cons for either. Top level Domain Names are ranked better in search engines and are much better to capture natural traffic where-as sub-domains are ranked lower and are usually used as either practice sites, just basic web-presence on a local scale, or, as mentioned, for specific departments within a top-level domain that garners major traffic to begin with. So, if you’re going to be building your site especially to make money online, or to create a strong website presence for your business, having your own top-level domain is the way to go.

Domain Name Extensions: .Com vs .Net?

Domain Name ExtensionsIn addition to all that, if you’ve decided to purchase your own domain, you will now need to decide whether you can purchase a “.com” extension, or try another domain name extension. The preferred extension remains the coveted “.com” extension simply because everyone is well aware of it. It is already past the “name recognition” phase, and it’s what is typed in the most. So, for that reason, try to obtain a “.com” extension.

There are also “general” and unspoken rules of the internet where, for instance,  a “.org” is basically used by non-profits, a “.net” extension was commonly used for “networking” group, etc. Although it no longer makes a difference in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), there is another reason why you should always use the .com extension if you can get it. The major reason why you should use a .com extension is because – since it is the most memorable – any marketing you do to create any type of name recognition under any other lesser known extension will likely benefit the site owner of the .com extension – not yours.

Privacy

If or when you choose to go with a “top-level” domain, you will also need to choose whether you keep your domain registration information private so that it is not “public” information. If you purchase your domain from a Registrar that allows you a choice at the time of purchase, the cost can be anywhere from a few dollars up to ten dollars or more to protect your information. Of course, it may not matter much to you, but for those who do not wish to be contacted by others, you will need to buy the “privacy” option. Domains purchased through Wealthy Affiliate already have the privacy included, and you can read more about why you should consider the privacy option here: Why Buy Domain Privacy.

What’s Hosting Provider?

Hosting Provider ServicesOk, so your decision has been made, now what? Well, if you have pursued your own domain, you will need a “Hosting” provider – somewhere to “park” your domain and hold all the great content you will be writing. Allow me to backtrack just a bit. The site where you purchase your domain is known as “the Registrar.” The registrar is not necessarily the same as your hosting provider. Your domain name will need to be renewed on a regular basis, otherwise, it will go back into the Registry as “available” and has the ability to be re-sold to someone else. If you’ve built up any traffic, it will likely be “valued” at a higher amount since it has now been indexed and it now has traffic.

Moving On

Ok, backtrack over, let’s move on.  You now have a choice whether to “host” the domain name with your registrar, or “point” the domain to another Host provider. Depending on what you are planning to do with your site will help determine your decision.  There are a number of hosting providers that are reasonably priced. They are varied in their capabilities, as some have better service than others, and there is usually a monthly charge associated with “hosting.” However, with that stated, there is also way to both create and host a website for free. We’ve already touched upon that possibility which is using a sub-domain that allows users to build website pages for free. So, for now, let’s re-cap.

Summary Of Costs:

As discussed, there are two costs so far:

  1. The initial purchase of a domain name for a year, or more, and
  2. The monthly hosting fee.
