First of all, what is “Internet Marketing?”
According to Webopedia, Internet Marketing is any online marketing that refers to advertising and marketing efforts which specifically uses the web and/or email to drive direct sales via electronic commerce. With this definition, it is the “topical” and definitive overview that enables many forms of online marketing, and we’ll be getting into more details in this article about “internet marketing blog talk.”

If you’re a beginner, I am writing this article with you in mind. However, if you’re more advanced, you really should check out this awesome article I recently came across by Neil Patel. If you have been around a little while, you’ll probably recognize some of the names he mentions of those who are BIG in the world of Internet Marketing. So, please do take the time to read, and bookmark, his article: “What is Online Marketing.” It’s a keeper for sure.
Oh, and if you think you’re late to the “party,” think again. I came across another recent article about how this industry, especially Affiliate Marketing, is expected to grow to 6.8 Billion over the next 5 years. Overview of Internet Marketing
Ok, there are three distinct types of Internet Marketing, and they’re outlined here:
- Website Marketing
- E-commerce
- Affiliate Marketing
- Promotional websites, online advertising
- Organic search engine results via SEO efforts,
- Search Engine Marketing (SEM) involves paid ads based on key word research such as Pay Per Click (PPC), Google AdWords, and display ads especially those that use “retargeting ads.” But, I would also add a few more:
- Content Marketing which can also include: a blog’s guest writer, e-books, kindle books, videos, podcasting, newsletters and white papers.
- E-mail Marketing includes advertising and promotional marketing efforts via email messages to current or prospective customers. And, speaking of email marketing, there are opportunities out there where you do not even have to build a blog or even have a website. - Social Media Marketing involves advertising and marketing efforts via social media sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, Google Plus, You Tube, and others.
What does Internet Marketing mean to you?
For those born more recently, or at least since the late 80’s, this internet thing is totally normal. Who knew there was ever a time “BEFORE” computers?!
For those of us who were born “a while ago,” ahem, you are either one of two schools of thought:
- Oh, no! Computers! Get them away! I have no idea what they are, how to use them, and “NO, I DON’T WANT TO LEARN!”or
- Hmmm.. a computer. Ok. I have to learn something new. Let’s see, if it can do this? Oh, WOW, ok, great. Now, can it do that? Ok, hey, you know… I can apply this to …OMG! …I think I have found …FREEDOM!
Yes, “FREEDOM!” That’s what it now means to many, me included.
Working From Home Is REAL
As I have written before, the internet has truly opened up a whole new world for many who have embraced this new world. While many were losing their life long secure jobs, and the internet came into being, going online and actually making money from home became a very real possibility. It has now become reality!
For those who have read my previous posts, you’ll know that I did try going online many years ago. I had a number of websites, and online stores, back when Yahoo had stores, but after the “Dot.Com” bubble burst, and after losing a nice little chunk of money in the stock market that was slated to be a down-payment on a four family, I became a bit disillusioned.. and yes, I went and got a “J.O.B.” ..yech, ptooey…
So, after that stint, and after I worked in Real Estate for a while longer after that, and after experiencing some nasty injuries in 2014 and 2015, I have found myself online once again. But, this time it’s different. This time, I’m here to stay, and since I am now a member of a fabulous community, it’s become so much easier to keep up with the technological changes.
As I read more and more online marketers, bloggers, affiliate marketers, authors, and such others, earning more than six figures a year, I am just kicking myself that I didn’t stay with it long ago. But, ok, …no need to “look back.” …It’s all “water under the bridge..” no sense in “crying over ‘spilt’ milk…” You get my drift…
In any case, I am back now to this “internet thing,” and it’s already starting to reap rewards – both financial and non-financial. I enjoy helping others learn about the possibilities, and I especially enjoy helping small businesses get online and market their businesses.
So, for those who are new to computers, domains, blogging, writing, or anything related to the internet, and think you can’t do it, I have one thing to say to you:
YES, YOU CAN!
Back when I was doing my online stuff, it was “before” the open source website, now known as WordPress, was widely offered. Since then, WordPress has grown and has made things not only easily available to the world, but it has opened up so many doors for those who had no reason or desire to learn html, (hyper text markup language), which is the computer code that is “behind” every website.
Way back then, I took off a year to learn html, and began building sites… Of course, just after that, those who created it then changed it slightly to include something called CSS – or cascading style sheets… which changed, pretty much, what I had just learned… So, yes, it was back to the drawing board… well, until I tripped over WordPress – again.
Now, with the wide availability of WordPress and because it’s easily incorporated into many hosting plans, people don’t really have to learn html… I mean, knowing html comes in handy from time to time, but it’s not as necessary as it was before. So, you have absolutely no reason to stay away from this. This is SOOOOOO user friendly, it’s ridiculous!
Now that WordPress is pretty much the “norm,” and now that I have since found and become a member of Wealthy Affiliate, there is truly no excuse! It is incredibly easy to build a web-site now, and there is just no reason for anyone not to pursue your own online presence – especially if you own your own small business or wish to work from home.
The Future of Internet Marketing
So, if you think you’re late to the game, think again. The internet is still growing, and there is a lot of opportunity left for those who are still dragging their feet.
According to MarketingCharts.com, ecommerce will continue to grow from 5.9% of total retail spending in 2014 to an average of 8.8% through 2018.
In addition, Business to Business (B2B) sales are also expected to grow from 8.5% in 2014 to 12.1% through 2020.
